Dr. Richard I. Cantor, Folsom Optometrist, died January 2, 2012 of complications from pneumonia he was 70.
He was born in Rochester, N.Y. and moved to Southern California in 1947. He eventually met his wife, Mary Kay while attending Optometry school and working at Disneyland as Mini Mouse. After spending three years of active duty in the U.S. Air force, he and Mary Kay moved to Folsom in 1968 and have been active members of the community for over 40 years.
Dr. Cantor dedicated over 40 years to practicing optometry in the Folsom community, receiving his Doctor of Optometry from the Southern California College of Optometry. He was a long time member of the American Optometric Association as well as past president of the Sacramento Valley Optometric Society. In addition he was a 30 year member of and on the Board of Directors of the Vision One Credit Union.
Devoted to the Folsom community, Dr. Cantor participated in numerous community organizations. He was a four-time past president of the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. He was a member and past president of the Folsom Rotary Club and treasurer of the Folsom Rotary Foundation – which provided him the opportunity to fulfill his passion of community service and volunteer work.
After serving as an optometrist in the U. S. Air Force Reserves for 30 years, he retired with the rank of Lt. Colonel while maintaining his private practice.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Kay and children: Brady Cantor of Folsom; Laura Cantor and son-in-law Jeremy Morrow-Jones and step-granddaughter, Arianna of Folsom.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the Rotary Foundation at P.O. Box 756 Folsom, CA 95763.
