Jeanne C. (Shaw) Ayers

Age 89, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2012 with her loving family by her side.

Born in Wilmington, Jeanne was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Esther (Keeley) Shaw. While living most of her life in Wilmington, Jeanne resided at Somerford House Assisted Living for the last three years. After graduating from Wilmington High School, she worked in Philadelphia until her marriage. She then worked at Memorial Hospital while raising her two sons. Later, she worked for Dupont Company retiring after 20 years of service.

Jeanne was a devoted wife and mother; her loyalty and dedication to her family was boundless. She had many interests including being an avid reader with a special fondness for biographies. She loved the beauty of poetry, often writing poems for family and friends. Jeanne was a great cook and loved cooking for her family.

Jeanne took great pride in decorating her home with beautiful things. She enjoyed her many shopping sprees and her generosity often included buying gifts for her family and friends.

Affectionately known as "Nanny Jeanne", she was the beloved wife of William F. Ayers with whom she shared 64 years of marriage. In addition to her husband, Jeanne is survived by her two sons, Mark S. Ayers and Sharon Sampson of Wilmington, David P. Ayers and wife Elaine of Bear; six grandchildren, Jason Ayers and his wife Allison, Tara Dicecco and her husband Steve, David P. Ayers Jr. and Tessa Payton, Christina Ayers and her fiancé Mark Pecorella, Dana Scott and her husband Michael, and Andrea Mattson and her husband Bill.; and 10 great-grandchildren. Also surviving, is her sister, Margaret "Peg" Sanderson. She was predeceased by her mother, Esther Shaw, and her sister, Miriam Pritchett.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Somerford House and especially to the professionals at Vitas Hospice for their compassionate and professional care during her final days.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, January 10 at 10 am at St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, where friend and family are invited to visitation after 9 am. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.
