Freda J. Abdoo Obituary
Poughkeepsie – Freda J. Abdoo 89, of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by her family. Freda was born on January 7, 1922 in Poughkeepsie, the daughter of the late Assid and Rumsa Soman Abdoo, and was a lifelong resident. She was a graduate of St. Mary’s School, Poughkeepsie, class of 1936 and Poughkeepsie High School, class of 1940, as well as St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing in 1943. Freda enlisted in the US Army Nurse Corp. immediately after graduation as a 1st Lieutenant and served in the European Theater of Operation both at a Mash Unit in Verdun France and Germany. While on active duty Freda received Campaign Medals as well as two Presidential Citations from President Harry S. Truman. She was a former member of the American Legion Post 37. Freda joined the staff of Mary H. Abdoo’s Bridal and Fashion Shoppe after she retired from active nursing and worked at the shoppe for over thirty-five years until the store was sold. She is survived by her sister Hannah R. Abdoo of Poughkeepsie and her brother and sister-in-law John and Doris Abdoo of Poughkeepsie and many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers Joseph, James, Fred and Albert Abdoo and her sisters Jean Abdoo Hoffman, Mary Abdoo and Gemile M. Abdoo Marrone. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, October 23, 2011 from 4:00 – 8:00pm at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, October 24, 2011 at 10:30am at St. Mary’s Church, 231 Church St., Poughkeepsie, NY. Burial will follow at St. Peter’s Cemetery.
