William C. HANSON Obituary check_circle

William “Bill” C. Hanson, 91, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Marlaine and Jona Tierney, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on Jan. 26, 1923, in Starksboro, the son of Amos and Ruth Hanson. Bill was a farmer in Monkton for many years before buying the A&W in Middlebury with his wife, Gladys, and then retired from the State of Vermont. He was a W.W.II veteran, a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Vergennes, Florona Grange, Libanus Lodge, the Shriners, and a member of the Shrine Clown Unit. He was an avid sports fan, especially the St. Louis Cardinals. He attended many of his children and grandchildren’s sporting events. Bill is survived by six children, Marcia and William Dunn of Monkton, Maureen Jennings of South Burlington, Mary and Bruce Cassidy of Monkton, Marlaine and Jonathan Tierney of Starksboro, Paul and Martha Hanson of Monkton, and Bonnie and Raymond Huizenga of Monkton; 16 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren, with two more arriving any day; and three stepgreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Thomas McKean of Monkton, stepson-in-law, Dave Elliot of Wyoming, and Katherine Piper of Indiana, and their families; three brothers, Jesse and Ruth Hanson of Bristol, Earl Hanson of Monkton, and Charles and Rose Hanson of Williston; several nieces and nephews; and close friends He was predeceased by his wife, Lola Hanson; stepdaughter, Martha Elliot; and Gladys Hanson, the mother of his children. A special thanks to his daughters, Mary and Marlaine, and son-in-law, Jona. Without their care, he would not have been able to remain at home. We also want to thank Addison Home Health and Hospice for their care and compassion, especially Ann, Laura, Sara, Heather, Courtney, Alex and many others. Also, Oliver, for his Monday visits with Bill. Funeral services will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Vergennes on Tuesday, April 1, 2014, at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be on Monday, March 31, 2014, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Brown-McClay Funeral Home in Bristol.
