Helen Gowans Law Obituary check_circle

In loving memory of Helen Gowans Law, born on December 25, 1933 in Toronto, Ontario. Helen passed away at her home, Amica, with family by her side, on Tuesday, March 12, 2024, after a valiant struggle.

Beloved wife and soulmate for almost 62 wonderful years of marriage, to the late Douglas Alex ‘Doug’ Law (2017). Cherished and devoted mother of Peggy Dunham (Dave) of London, Doug Law Jr. (Marguerite) of London, Patricia Clute (Barry) of Komoka, Susan Grau (Win) of Middlesex Center, Laurie Johle (Ernst) of Bracebridge. Loving grandmother to Colin (Kelly) and Eric Dunham, David Law, Stacey and Carolyn Johle, and Hudson and Cooper Grau. Affectionate great-grandmother to Kayleigh and Dawson Dunham. Helen will also be dearly missed by her niece Maureen McKenzie (née Thompson) who has always been like a daughter to her. Maureen and Dr. Neil McKenzie have been a big part of our family for many years.

Helen was an active woman who loved tennis, badminton, and swimming, among many other pursuits. In earlier years Helen enjoyed spending winters with her husband Doug in Okeechobee, Florida and her summers swimming and bird watching at her beloved cottage on Lake Kashwakamak. She met her husband Doug at the age of 19, and they were almost inseparable after that time.

Helen’s final months and days were very difficult, and so the family is extremely appreciative of the care and the many kindnesses shown to her over the last five years while living at Amica. In a place with so many great people, there are some who stood out for their care and compassion while assisting Mom: Verylon, Yoshi, Angela, Beverly, and Irina always had a smile and a joke for Mom to cheer her when she was feeling down. We have also been grateful for Gilda’s friendly helpfulness and efficiency on the concierge desk, as well as Amy’s cheerful, positive attitude in all her dealings with Mom and the family. With great appreciation, we would also like to recognize Dr. Dina Al Khatib and Mom’s palliative nurses, Bibin and Pupli, as well as her VON Hospice at Home PSWs Fatima and Mary Ann, for their exemplary care of Mom in her final days.

Cremation has taken place and will be followed later by a private family interment at Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, March 22, 2024, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North, London, where a Celebration of Helen’s life will be conducted on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at 2:30 p.m., followed by an informal reception.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners, The Salvation Army, or Riverside United Church.
