Asheville – William “Bill” Tazewell Morris, Jr., 80, a native and lifelong resident of Asheville, died at his home on Saturday, June 23, 2012. The cause was lung cancer.
Bill was the son of the late William Tazewell and Evelyn Bailey Morris, and husband of the late Sara Martin Morris. He attended Grace Elementary School and graduated from The Asheville School in 1950. He attended Davidson College and the University of North Carolina, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity.
He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War. Bill retired in 1997 after 24 years as a salesman for Southern Pump and Tank Company of Charlotte.
Bill was active in the Asheville Rotary Club, the Asheville Jaycees, and the Rhododendron Brigade of Guards and was a longtime member of the Asheville Country Club.
Survivors include his wife, Arlene Pulley Morris of Leland, N.C., two sons, William Tazewell Morris III and wife Penny Morris of Durham, NC and Joseph Maryon Morris and wife Eve Gartner of Brooklyn, NY, five grandchildren, a brother, Augustus R. Morris, Sr. of Asheville, and a nephew and niece.
Bill and his family were grateful for the comfort and care he received during his illness from a multitude of care givers: his doctors, including Drs. Anita Deshpande, Virgil Thrash, and Trent McCain, and their staffs; nurse Susan Malter and other hospice professionals at Care Partners; and capable and compassionate home care givers Vicki Hyatt, Mary McMahan and Marti Banks.
Well known for his love of animals, Bill rescued dozens of sick and injured dogs and cats over the years and brought them into his home. In lieu of flowers, he suggested that friends consider memorial gifts to a local charity that helps animals, such as Brother Wolf or Animal Haven of Asheville.
A memorial service will be held 2:00 PM, Friday, June 29 in the chapel of Morris Funeral Home, 304 Merrimon Avenue with Dr. Robert Blackburn, Jr. officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Private interment will be held at Riverside Cemetery
