Thomas Achczynski Obituary check_circle

Thomas J. Achczynski, MSW, ACSW, of Stevens Point, died Wednesday Dec. 7, 2011, after a long courageous battle with Huntington’s chorea disease. He was born in Milwaukee, on June 2, 1934, to the late Helen and Stanley Achczynski.

Tom earned his undergraduate degree and graduate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was a veteran of the United States Army. In Tom’s early years he was a golden gloves boxer, played the guitar and enjoyed horseback riding.

His career took him from being a Milwaukee police officer, a liaison agent for the Milwaukee Region of the division of Corrections of the State Department of Health and Social Services, a psychiatric social worker and director of community services for the Columbia County Guidance Health Center, and lastly to a regional administrator in the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services.

Tom loved nature and being outdoors. He especially enjoyed the years spent on his land in the Cascade mountain area and the home that he and Helen built together.

Survivors include his Son Robert (Tammy); grandchildren, Jonathan, Nicholas, Bridget and Megan; Sister, Rose; and nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (nee Hackett), an accomplished anthropologist, writer, artist and pianist; his second wife, Peri (nee Shaw), a social worker for the Department of Health and Social Services; his sisters, Alice, and Dorothy; and his brother, Henry (Curly).

Funeral Service, will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 10, 2011, at the Pisarski/Dzikoski Funeral Home Stevens Point. The Rev Bill Christiansen officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the Forest Cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 9 a.m. until time of service at the funeral home
